Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. She was only a young toddler when her father who worked as a carnival barker died. Her mother was forced to work in jobs like waitressing, cleaning and washing. Ruth grew in a poor Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She attended school in Boston. She quit school in just two years in order to study acting. The route she took did not come without challenges. In New York, her first job involved posing stills for crime magazines, acting work she wanted eluded. In New York, she worked at a bar, as a check-in girl before quitting and moving back to Boston. The New England Repertory Company was her first gig as a regular actor. She earned money by doing shifts during the day, working as an Usherette. Also, she studied drama. She eventually graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
